ATOBRA
ATOBRA, translated as bought life in Akan, is a play set in Ghana that explores the burden of indebtedness, the cost of aid, and the spiritual consequences of broken covenants. Sponsored by his village with hopes that he will return to build schools, marry a local woman, and uplift the community, a young man named Atobra finds himself entangled in promises too heavy to bear. Torn between duty and desire, Atobra must choose between fulfilling his communal obligations or surrendering to the seductive pull of Agartha, his university lover with destructive intentions. Set across a modern city, a rural village, and a haunting spiritual realm, the play symbolically critiques foreign aid dependency, betrayal, and the dangerous weight of expectations.
